What a proper barbershop shave taught us about scalp skin (that no lab ever would)

There's a version of skincare knowledge that comes from research papers, dermatology textbooks, and clinical trials. It's rigorous, it's evidence-based, and it's genuinely useful.
There's another version that comes from doing the same thing to real skin, on real people, thousands of times, and paying close attention to what happens. That's the version we have. And it turns out to be a different kind of useful.
Here's what twenty years of professional head shaving in a barbershop actually taught us about scalp skin, and how it fed directly into the way we formulated Hardwick & Co.
The thing most men get wrong immediately after shaving
The most consistent observation we've made over years behind the chair is this: men treat a freshly shaved scalp as if the job is done when the razor comes off. Rinse, dry, get on with the day.
The job is not done.
A head shave, particularly a close wet shave with a straight razor or a sharp cartridge, removes not just the hair but a superficial layer of dead skin cells. This is mechanical exfoliation. The scalp immediately after shaving is in a temporarily heightened state of vulnerability: the outermost protective layer has been partially removed, the follicles are open, and the skin's barrier function is reduced compared to its resting state.
In a professional barbershop, this moment is when the aftercare begins. A warm towel first, to open things up, soften the skin, and allow any residual product to be removed cleanly. Then a cooling application, something to calm the inflammatory response that shaving triggers, close the follicles, and start the process of barrier restoration. Then moisture, to replace what the shave stripped and support the healing process.
The whole sequence takes less than five minutes. Most men at home skip all of it.
Over months and years of daily or weekly shaving without aftercare, the cumulative effect is visible. Scalp skin that's been repeatedly stripped and not replenished develops a rougher texture, ages faster, and becomes progressively more sensitive to both the shaving process itself and to environmental exposure. It's not dramatic, it happens slowly, but it's consistent, and it's entirely avoidable.
The shave is the beginning of the process, not the end of it. What happens in the five minutes after the razor comes off matters more than most men realise.
What the hot towel is actually doing
The hot towel is probably the element of a professional shave that men remember most clearly, and the one they're least likely to replicate at home. It feels like ceremony. It isn't, or at least it isn't only that.
Warm, moist heat does several specific things to skin and hair. It softens the keratin structure of the hair, making it more pliable and easier to cut cleanly. It dilates the blood vessels immediately below the skin surface, increasing circulation and making the skin more receptive to subsequent product application. It relaxes the arrector pili, the tiny muscles attached to each follicle, which reduces the resistance the blade encounters during the shave.
For a head shave specifically, warm preparation makes a more meaningful difference than for a face shave. Scalp skin is thinner in some areas and the hair follicles tend to be more densely packed than on the face, which means the drag and resistance of a blade on unprepared scalp skin is more pronounced. A properly prepared scalp shaves more comfortably, with less irritation, and produces a closer result in fewer passes.
A warm shower before shaving achieves most of the same effect. Five minutes under warm water softens the scalp and the stubble adequately for a home shave. It's the preparation step that men most commonly skip when they're in a hurry, and the one that most reliably improves the experience when they don't.

What we noticed about different scalp types
One of the less obvious advantages of shaving a large number of different heads over a long period is that you develop a working taxonomy of scalp skin types that no textbook quite captures.
Some scalps are consistently dry, tight, slightly flaky, responding poorly to shaving without significant preparation and rich aftercare. These are often on men who are also dry-skinned elsewhere, who've been shaving their heads for years, or who live and work in low-humidity environments. They need emollient-rich products that genuinely restore the barrier rather than just sitting on the surface.
Some scalps are reactive, reddening quickly after shaving, showing irritation that settles within an hour but returns with each subsequent shave. These often belong to men who shave too frequently, too dry, or with blades that are past their effective life. The fix is usually preparation, technique, and a calming aftercare product rather than a more aggressive skincare routine.
Some scalps are remarkably resilient, shaving well regardless of conditions, showing minimal irritation, maintaining consistent moisture without much intervention. These men often credit it to genetics, and they're probably right, but they also tend to be men who've developed a consistent routine without necessarily thinking of it as skincare.
The pattern that emerged across all of these types was consistent: the scalps that looked and felt best were the ones that were looked after the most consistently, not the most elaborately. Nobody with a genuinely good-looking scalp had a fourteen-step routine. They had a simple habit done reliably, with products that were appropriate for their skin.
The best-looking scalps we've seen over twenty years weren't the ones with the most elaborate routines. They were the ones with the most consistent ones.
What we couldn't find on the shelf
When we started taking scalp care seriously as a professional obligation, not just something to mention to clients but something to actively recommend, we went looking for products we could stand behind with confidence.
The face care aisle had plenty of options. The men's grooming section had styling products, shaving creams, beard oils. The bald head skincare category, such as it was, had a handful of products with mixed credentials and, mostly, a matte-finish positioning that we knew from daily observation didn't suit the majority of the men we were serving.
We wanted something organic and naturally formulated, because we were recommending it for daily use on exposed skin and we cared what was in it. We wanted something built specifically for scalp skin rather than adapted from a face cream. We wanted a finish that looked like the skin was healthy rather than like it had been treated. And we wanted anti-ageing credentials that were backed by the ingredients rather than just claimed on the label.
That product didn't exist in any form we were satisfied with. So we made it.

How the barbershop shaped the formula
Every formulation decision in Hardwick & Co. traces back to something we observed in the chair.
The emphasis on barrier restoration, shea butter, jojoba, lipid-rich emollients, comes from years of watching what happens to scalp skin that gets repeatedly stripped by shaving without being properly replenished. The skin needs its barrier rebuilt, not just its surface moisturised.
The aloe vera component comes from watching reactive scalps respond to post-shave calming products. Aloe's mild anti-inflammatory properties aren't marketing language, they're something we've observed working on irritated scalp skin, consistently, for a long time.
The absence of synthetic fragrance comes from watching men with sensitive scalps react to fragranced products applied immediately after shaving, when the skin's defences are temporarily lowered. It's not a theoretical concern. It's something that happened in the chair, repeatedly, until we decided it wasn't acceptable.
And the finish, healthy rather than matte, comes from the simple observation that the scalps that looked genuinely good weren't the dull, powder-dry ones. They were the ones with a quiet, natural luminosity that said the skin was hydrated, supported, and in good condition. That's what we formulated for, because that's what we'd seen.
