Sun, wind, cold: how the elements wreck your scalp (and what actually helps)

Hair does a lot of quiet, unremarked work. It insulates the scalp against cold. It creates a physical barrier against UV. It traps a layer of humidity next to the skin. It reduces the direct impact of wind. None of this is why people grow hair, but it's what hair does, and it's what stops happening the moment you shave your head.

A bald scalp is exposed skin. It faces whatever the weather is doing, directly, every time you go outside, and in the UK that means a fairly relentless rotation of conditions, none of which are particularly kind to unprotected skin. Here's what each one actually does and what the appropriate response is.


The four things your scalp is dealing with

UV - the one most men underestimate

UV radiation is the primary driver of premature skin ageing and the main environmental risk factor for skin cancer. Most men know this, at least in the abstract. Fewer apply it consistently to their scalp.

The geometry is simple: the top of a bald head faces the sky at close to a right angle for most of the day. In summer between 11am and 3pm (the peak UV window), the scalp receives more direct radiation per square centimetre than almost any other area of the body. The nose, brow and ears create some shade on the face. The scalp has none.

Crucially, UV is not a summer-only concern in the UK. Around 80 percent of UV radiation penetrates cloud cover. UV levels on a grey October morning are lower than a clear June afternoon but not zero, and because most men only think about sun protection in warm weather, the autumn, winter and spring exposures accumulate without any protection at all. Over years and decades, this builds into significant cumulative damage: rougher texture, uneven pigmentation, and meaningfully elevated skin cancer risk on the most visible part of your head.

The response is SPF, applied daily from March through October at a minimum, and on any bright day year-round. A combined SPF moisturiser applied as part of a morning routine costs thirty seconds. The alternative is a decade of quiet accumulation that announces itself all at once.

UV doesn't wait for a heatwave. It turns up on a Tuesday in April while you're walking to the car. By the time you notice the damage it's already done.

Wind - the underrated one

Wind is the element most bald men don't think about in skincare terms, and it does more damage than it gets credit for.

Wind accelerates transepidermal water loss, the rate at which moisture evaporates from the skin surface. In still air, the skin maintains a thin layer of humidity immediately above it which slows this process. Wind strips that layer constantly, leaving skin exposed to the full drying effect of the air. On a scalp without hair to create any buffer, this effect is immediate and sustained.

The result, after time spent in significant wind, coastal walks, outdoor sports, a winter commute into a headwind, is scalp skin that feels tight, dry, and sometimes mildly irritated. Redness around the hairline is common. The skin can look dull and feel uncomfortable for hours after the exposure ends.

Wind burn, the redness and irritation that follows prolonged wind exposure, is essentially the skin's inflammatory response to rapid, repeated moisture loss. It's not harmful in any lasting sense, but it's a signal that the skin's barrier has been stressed and needs replenishing.

The practical response: on days when you're going to be outside in significant wind, apply your moisturiser more generously than usual before you go out. It won't eliminate the effect but it reduces the moisture available to be stripped. After prolonged wind exposure, reapply immediately and give the skin time to settle before assessing whether it needs anything further.

Cold - what actually happens to scalp skin in winter

Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Step outside in January and you're walking into an environment with very low ambient humidity, which creates the same osmotic effect as wind, moisture moves from the skin surface into the drier air around it.

Cold also causes the blood vessels immediately under the skin to constrict, reducing the flow of nutrients and moisture to the skin's surface layers. Scalp skin in cold weather becomes less efficient at maintaining itself, at exactly the point when environmental conditions are making more demands of it.

This is why many men notice their scalp feels drier and more uncomfortable in winter even if they're spending less time outside. Cold air outdoors, combined with central heating indoors, which creates the same low-humidity environment as cold air but at the opposite temperature, leaves scalp skin in a state of chronic, low-level moisture deficit through the colder months.

The practical response for winter is to moisturise more consistently than in summer, not less. Morning application should be non-negotiable. An evening application of a slightly richer amount before bed, when the skin does most of its repair work, makes a meaningful additional difference during the colder months when the skin needs more support.

Central heating is as drying as cold air. You step in from a freezing commute and spend the rest of the day in a room with the humidity of a light desert. Your scalp notices even if you don't.

Heat and humidity - the less discussed problem

Summer's effect on scalp skin is less straightforward than UV alone. High heat and humidity change the skin's behaviour in ways that catch some men out.

Sweating on the scalp is the body's cooling mechanism and perfectly normal. But sweat is mildly saline and mildly acidic — prolonged contact with the skin surface, particularly on a hot day with repeated sweating, can disrupt the skin's natural pH and irritate the barrier. Men who exercise or work outdoors in summer sometimes notice their scalp becoming reactive or slightly itchy in ways that feel disconnected from dryness or UV damage.

High humidity also affects how products behave. A moisturiser that absorbs cleanly in winter may feel heavier and less comfortable in summer — the skin's own moisture content is higher and it needs less supplementing. In peak summer, lighter application of your daily cream is usually more appropriate than in winter, letting the SPF do the primary protective work.

The year round approach that covers most of it

Most of what the elements do to a bald scalp is addressed by two consistent habits:

  • SPF moisturiser every morning from spring through autumn, and on any bright day in winter. Not occasionally, not only when it feels sunny, but consistently. The cumulative effect of consistent protection over years is significant; the cumulative effect of intermittent protection is considerably less so.

Subtle hint, maybe this one??

  • A good daily moisturiser used consistently, with slightly increased frequency and quantity during cold or windy periods. The scalp will tell you when it needs more, tightness, dullness, and discomfort after outdoor exposure are all signals that the barrier is under stress and needs support.

The products need to be appropriate for scalp skin specifically - lipid-rich enough to genuinely restore the barrier, not just temporarily coat the surface. For daily use in all weather conditions, the formulation matters more than in categories where you're using something occasionally.

A bald head doesn't have the luxury of hair absorbing some of what the weather throws at it. That's just the situation. The response is straightforward: be consistent, be appropriate for the season, and treat the scalp as the exposed skin it is rather than an afterthought.
